“Proper earlier than the pandemic hit, I used to be on a small tour and located myself again in a metropolis I used to name house,” Jakobsen mentioned of the brand new single in an announcement. “I hadn’t been again since I left it (and the connection I had there) behind a very good few years in the past. I felt fairly shocked with how my physique and thoughts reacted to being again, and realised rapidly that I had some emotional unpacking to do. I used to be staying with my buddy Romain on the time, and for me my time in his condominium encapsulates this realisation and the beginning of me coping with these ghosts from my previous that had laid dormant for some time. I used to be so overwhelmed on the time that it felt as if I used to be going loopy. I actually did really feel haunted, as if I had jumped right into a time-machine and was one way or the other again prior to now.”
Gardening, the follow-up to Jakobsen’s 2020 file A Non permanent Soothing, was produced by Hans Olav Settem and Simen Mitlid, with Zach Hanson (Bon Iver, Hand Habits, Sylvan Esso, The Tallest Man On Earth) dealing with the blending. It contains instrumental contributions from Emma Gatrill and Marcus Hamblett.
“Gardening tackles a selected relationship from my previous, and its impact on me prior to now, current and future,” Jakobsen defined. “When writing it I felt I used to be doing a steady and elaborate type of emotional gardening, while in actual life I used to be tending to my modest however beautiful backyard in my house in Oslo. I discovered nice pleasure and luxury within the bodily job of gardening, weeding and tending to my modest patio of flowers and edible crops, and their colors and metaphors seeped into my writing. It’s a file I’m immensely happy with, and one which I hope could make others who’ve been by means of related issues really feel seen and fewer alone.”
