Like so many different turning factors in Black historical past, it began with a police incident. In the summertime of 1966, America’s high civil rights leaders had descended on Mississippi for what grew to become referred to as the Meredith March. They have been making their method from Memphis, Tennessee to Jackson, Mississippi to hold on a solo voting rights march begun by James Meredith, the Black activist who had built-in the College of Mississippi three years earlier. Meredith had been shot by a White supremacist and hospitalized with extreme bullet wounds.
